Scorpion Exhausts Guide: Resonated vs. Non-Resonated, GPF-Back & Predator Track Systems

Handcrafted in Derbyshire since 1992, Scorpion Exhausts represents the pinnacle of British performance engineering. Proven on the track in competitive motorsport, including the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), Mini Challenge, and the Isle of Man TT, Scorpion transfers race-winning exhaust tech directly to high-performance street cars.

Constructed from premium aerospace-grade T304 stainless steel and TIG-welded by hand, every Scorpion system is dyno-developed to eliminate restrictive backpressure, improve throttle response, and deliver an iconic exhaust note.

Scorpion Exhausts System Selection Guide

System Type Replaces Sound Level MOT Compliant? ECU Remap Required? Best For
GPF-Back Post-GPF to Tailpipes 20-30% over OEM Yes (100% Road Legal) No Post-2018 cars wanting sound without voiding warranty
Cat-Back Post-Cat to Tailpipes 25-40% over OEM Yes (100% Road Legal) No Pre-GPF builds seeking deeper tone and flow
Predator Rear Silencer Delete 80-100% over OEM (Maximum) Yes (If Cat/GPF intact) No Dedicated track weapons and show cars
Sports Cat Downpipe Turbo to Mid-pipe +30% Volume +Flow Yes (200-Cell High-Flow) Yes (Stage 2 Tuning) Mapped cars seeking max turbo spool & power
De-Cat Downpipe Turbo to Mid-pipe +50% Volume + Flow No (Track Use Only) Yes (Stage 2 tuning) Off-road track builds with zero restriction

System Types Breakdown

GPF-Back Exhausts (Modern Performance Cars)

Designed specifically for post-2018 vehicles fitted with a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF/OPF). This system replaces the pipework and rear backbox from the particulate filter rearward. It liberates overrun pops, bangs, and exhaust volume without touching the factory emissions hardware, keeping your car 100% road legal, MOT compliant, and warranty safe.

Cat-Back Exhausts (Pre-GPF Platforms)

A classic performance upgrade that replaces everything from the primary catalytic converter rearward. By removing restrictive factory silencers and increasing pipe diameter, a Cat-Back reduces overall system weight and unleashes a deeper, richer exhaust note while maintaining primary catalytic converters for hassle-free MOT passes.

The Predator Series (Maximum Volume)

For enthusiasts who demand un-muffled volume, Scorpion’s Predator range replaces the rear silencer entirely with precision-bent, straight-through pipework. By removing the backbox baffles, the Predator setup delivers minimal backpressure, maximum weight savings, and a raw, aggressive acoustic roar designed for the track.

Resonated vs. Non-Resonated & Active Valves

Tailor your car's acoustic profile based on how you drive:

  • Resonated Systems: Feature an in-line tuned center silencer. This silencer is acoustically engineered to cancel out harsh cabin drone at cruising speeds (2,000 - 2,500RPM on UK motorways) while allowing a crisp, sporty tone under hard acceleration. Highly recommended for daily drivers.
  • Non-Resonated Systems: Replace the center silencer with a smooth, unsilenced straight pipe. This creates a louder, sharper exhaust note across the entire rev range, perfect for drivers who want to hear every throttle input.
  • Active Valve Integration: Scorpion’s valved exhausts utilize your car’s factory electronic actuators. In Comfort or Eco mode, the valves stay closed, routing gas through internal silencer chambers for quiet neighborhood driving. Switch to Sport or Race mode, and the valves open instantly, bypassing the silencer for a straight-through tone.

Downpipes: Sports Cat vs. De-Cat

If you are aiming for Stage 2 power, upgrading the restrictive factory downpipe is mandatory to lower Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGTs) and accelerate turbo spool:

  • 200-Cell High-Flow Sports Catalyst: Uses a metallic substrate with larger internal pass through channels than dense factory ceramic cats. Reduces backpressure significantly while maintaining enough filtration to pass UK MOT road emissions tests. (Select setups feature full ECE Approval).
  • De-Cat (Catless) Downpipe: Completely removes the catalyst for an unrestricted, straight-through exhaust path. Offers the absolute maximum boost response and power potential, but will not pass a UK MOT road emissions test and is strictly intended for off-road/circuit use. (Requires Stage 2 ECU tuning to code out the post-cat O2 Engine Warning Light).

Tailpipe Finishes & Styling

Scorpion offers hand-finished tailpipes designed to fit your rear diffuser perfectly:

  • Carbon Fibre Ascari & Ascari Evo: Premium dry carbon sleeves with high temp matte clear coats, featuring inner stainless linings for motorsport-inspired styling.
  • Daytona & Indy: Classic mirror-polished T304 stainless steel with slash cut or inward rolled edges.
  • Monaco: Twin oval rolled profiles designed for understated, executive OEM+ fitment.

Backed by a Lifetime Anti-Corrosion Warranty on all T304 stainless steel pipework, Scorpion Exhausts deliver race-bred British craftsmanship directly to your vehicle.

  • For daily drivers: Choose a Resonated GPF-Back / Cat-Back with Active Valves.
  • For Stage 2 fast-road builds: Choose a Non-Resonated System paired with a 200-Cell Sports Cat.
  • For track weapons: Choose a Predator Series System paired with a De-Cat Downpipe.
