The Audi S1 8X is a true modern hot-hatch icon, combining supermini dimensions with formidable, all-weather capability. At the heart of the S1 lies the renowned 2.0 TFSI EA888 Gen 3 engine, producing a factory-standard 231 PS (228 bhp) and 370 Nm of torque. Mated exclusively to a 6-speed manual gearbox and Audi’s legendary Quattro all-wheel-drive system, utilising a custom fifth-generation Haldex multi-plate clutch setup, this pocket rocket delivers effortless launch capability and exceptional traction in all conditions.
Widely regarded in the UK enthusiast community as one of the most tuneable platforms on the road, the S1’s EA888 engine shares core architecture with its larger siblings, meaning substantial power gains can be unlocked with the right performance hardware and software upgrades.
Tuning Information
The Audi S1 8X is famously heavily restricted from the factory, making it one of the most rewarding VAG platforms to modify. A high quality Stage 1 ECU remap completely transforms the character of the EA888 Gen 3 engine, instantly pushing power figures comfortably past the 300 bhp mark with no additional hardware required. However, because the S1 is exclusively a manual, it is highly recommended to budget for an uprated performance clutch as the factory unit is notoriously weak and will quickly slip under the increased torque of a mapped car.
For owners looking to push further into the mid-to-high 300 bhp range, Stage 2 tuning requires specific supporting hardware to manage airflow and cooling. Upgrading to a high-flow air intake, an uprated front-mount intercooler, and a less restrictive downpipe (such as a sports cat or de-cat) allows the IS38 turbo upgrade or standard IS20 to spool faster, breathe easier, and hold peak boost without suffering from heat soak.
Key Hardware for Tuning the Audi S1:
- Remaps - A Stage 1 remap can yield 300bhp, whilst Stage 2 & Stage 3 remaps can push the S1 even further
- Uprated Clutch Kit - The OEM clutch leaves a lot to be desired. We recommend the Performance Clutches DMF kit
- Performance Induction Kit - High flow air intakes, turbo elbows, and turbo muffler deletes to improve throttle response and turbo spool noises on the Audi S1
- Downpipes & Exhaust Systems - Essential for Audi S1 Stage 2 tuning, reducing back-pressure lowers exhaust gas temperatures and unlocks more top-end power.
- Uprated Intercoolers/Cooling - Crucial for keeping intake air temperatures (IAT) down during fast road driving or trackdays, this prevents the ECU from pulling power.
There are a whole host of modifications available for the Audi S1. Out of the box they are a very nimble, and well handling car. Suspension tuning really brings the S1 to life with a well setup aftermarket coilover, or lowering spring set up.

Maintenance, Common Faults & Buying Advice
The Audi S1 is generally a robust and reliable hot-hatch, provided it has been maintained to a high standard. The most critical aspect of S1 ownership is the Haldex four-wheel-drive system. To prevent the notoriously common issue of Haldex pump failure, it is strictly advised to change the Haldex oil and thoroughly clean the pump strainer (gauze) every 20,000 to 30,000 miles. Under the bonnet, the EA888 Gen 3 engine is incredibly strong, but owners should regularly inspect the water pump and thermostat housing, as the factory plastic units are prone to warping and causing coolant leaks.
If you are in the market for a used Audi S1, a comprehensive service history is non-negotiable. Always check if the car has been previously modified, ensure the factory clutch isn't slipping under hard acceleration, and check the engine bay for the sweet smell of burning coolant before taking a test drive.
