Whether you're chasing lap times, launching at the strip, or simply watching your stock clutch slip after a Stage 1 remap, upgrading your clutch is one of the most critical modifications you can make to your car’s driveline.
When it comes to high-torque capacity and race-proven engagement, US-based Competition Clutch (CCI) is a world leader. Engineered specifically for modified street builds and competition vehicles, Comp Clutch kits deliver massive clamping force without sacrificing pedal control.

Competition Clutch Stage Selection Table
Selecting a clutch that is too aggressive for your daily commute makes stop-start traffic unbearable, while selecting a clutch with insufficient torque capacity leads to rapid wear. Use this quick matrix to match your build:
| Stage | Friction Material | Hub Type | Torque Capacity | Pedal Feel | Best Application |
| Stage 1 | Full Organic | Sprung | 20-25% over OEM | Stock-like | OEM replacement / light street mods |
| Stage 2 | Steel-Backed Organic | Sprung | 80% over OEM | Moderate / Smooth | Stage 1 & 2 Remaps / Fast Road |
| Stage 3 | Segmented Ceramic | Sprung | 150% over OEM | Firm / Direct | Track Days / Heavy Turbo Builds |
| Stage 4 | 6-Puck Ceramic | Sprung or Rigid | 250% above OEM | Heavy / On-Off | Drag Racing / Track Weapons |
| Twin Disc | Twin Ceramic or Organic | Sprung / Rigid | High Torque (700lb/ft+) | Surprisingly light | Big Turbo / High Horsepower Builds |
The Stage Breakdown
Stage 1 Clutch Kit – Daily OEM+ Replacement
- Disc Type: Full-face organic.
- Characteristics: Designed for stock or lightly modified cars needing a durable replacement. Delivers ultra-smooth, progressive engagement with a stock-like pedal weight.
- Ideal For: Commuters wanting factory refinement with a slight bump in torque holding ability.
Stage 2 Organic (Brass Plus) – The Fast-Road Sweet Spot
- Disc Type: Steel-backed organic friction material with brass woven technology.
- Characteristics: This is the most popular choice for mapped daily drivers. The steel backing handles higher thermal loads without fading, while the heavy-duty pressure plate increases clamping force.
- Ideal For: Cars with Stage 1 or Stage 2 bolt-ons (intake, downpipe, remap) seeking firm, slip-free engagement without chatter.

Stage 3 Segmented Ceramic (2100 Series) – Fast Street & Track
- Disc Type: Segmented ceramic pads mounted to a sprung hub.
- Characteristics: Ceramic friction material withstands massive heat, making it practically immune to thermal fading. The segmented design dissipates heat faster than a continuous disc, though engagement is sharper and requires higher revs from a standstill.
- Ideal For: High-torque turbo builds, track-day cars, and aggressive fast-road driving.

Stage 4 Six-Puck Ceramic (1620 / 1420 Series) – Maximum Bite
- Disc Type: 6-Puck high-coefficient ceramic button disc.
- Characteristics: Engineered for raw holding power. The 6-puck layout focuses clamping force onto fewer points of contact, providing instant, race-style "on/off" engagement. Expect stiffer pedal pressure and drivetrain chatter if slipped in low-RPM traffic.
- Ideal For: Dedicated track weapons, drag racing, and high-horsepower builds where zero slippage is allowed.

Twin-Disc Kits (840 Series) – Big Horsepower Dominator
- Disc Type: Dual-disc setup (available in organic or ceramic).
- Characteristics: By doubling the surface area across two discs, a Twin Disc kit holds upwards of 1000nm of torque without requiring an ridiculously heavy pressure plate spring. This gives you high torque capacity alongside a surprisingly light pedal feel.
- Ideal For: Big-turbo platforms (e.g., 600bhp+ B58s, EA888 Gen 3/4, or K-Swaps) needing extreme torque handling with street driveability.

Single-Mass Flywheel (SMF) Conversions: What You Need to Know
Most modern performance kits from Competition Clutch include a lightweight forged steel Single-Mass Flywheel (SMF) (and where applicable, a concentric slave cylinder or release bearing).
Replacing your factory Dual-Mass Flywheel (DMF) with an SMF provides two major advantages:
- Rapid Rev Matching: Ditching heavy rotational weight allows the engine to rev freer and drop RPM faster between gear shifts.
- Indestructible Durability: Factory DMFs use internal rubber/spring dampers that degrade and split under high torque. An SMF is a solid forged unit that will never fail.
Tech Tip: Gear Chatter- Because a Single-Mass Flywheel lacks the internal rubber dampening of a stock DMF, some mechanical gear chatter (a faint rattling noise) will be audible from the gearbox at idle in neutral. This is completely normal for a performance SMF conversion and does not harm your transmission.

CRITICAL WARRANTY WARNING: The 500-Mile Bed-In Rule
Every brand-new Competition Clutch kit requires a strict 500 mile (800km) stop-and-go street bed-in period.
- Do NOT use full-throttle boost, launch the car, or do track laps during the first 500 miles.
- Drive in urban/city conditions requiring frequent gear changes and clutch pedal cycling.
Failing to bed the clutch in properly will glaze the friction material, leading to permanent slipping, harsh judder, and voiding the manufacturer warranty.
