Quaife ATB Differentials Explained: The Ultimate Traction Upgrade

Quaife ATB Differentials Explained: The Ultimate Traction Upgrade

When you tune an engine and push higher horsepower and torque through the drivetrain, you encounter a major hurdle: putting that extra power on the road. Without adequate traction, the money you spent on ECU remaps, high-flow intakes, and performance exhausts is wasted as your wheels simply spin.

Quaife is a world renowned British engineering company specializing in high performance drivetrain components for both road and motorsport applications. Founded in 1965, the brand has built a global reputation for precision engineering and innovation, particularly in the development of automatic torque biasing (ATB) differentials and close-ratio gearkits.

With decades of motorsport experience, Quaife’s components are trusted across disciplines such as touring cars, rallying, and endurance racing. Every product is engineered and manufactured in the UK to the highest quality standards, ensuring exceptional reliability and performance under demanding conditions.

Why You Need an Upgraded Differential: Open vs. Limited Slip

Every standard vehicle leaves the factory with an Open Differential. When you are driving in a straight line on dry tarmac, both wheels turn at the same speed and receive equal torque.

However, during cornering, the inner wheel becomes "unloaded" (losing grip as the car's weight transfers to the outside), or if you run over a slippery, wet patch, an open differential is inherently flawed:

  • The Path of Least Resistance: An open differential sends all engine torque to the wheel with the least resistance, which means the spinning wheel with no grip.
  • Wasted Power: The gripping wheel receives almost no torque, and your car bogs down or wheelspins heavily.

A Limited-Slip Differential (LSD) acts as a mechanical brain for your driven axle. Instead of wasting power on a spinning wheel, it restricts the speed difference between the two wheels, locking or biasing the torque so both sides continue to push the vehicle forward.

What is Automatic Torque Biasing (ATB)?

Unlike traditional clutch-plate limited-slip differentials, which rely on wearing parts, clutch packs, and pre-load settings that make the steering feel harsh, Quaife uses a patented Automatic Torque Biasing (ATB) Helical Gear design.

  • Continuous, Progressive Traction: Floating helical gear pinions mesh to progressively transfer torque away from the spinning wheel to the wheel with the most grip. It never suddenly "locks" solid; the power transfer is completely seamless and progressive.
  • No Clutch Plates to Wear Out: Conventional plate-type LSDs deteriorate over time and require regular rebuilds. The Quaife ATB relies entirely on highly durable gears. This means it requires zero maintenance and will never wear out or lose its performance.
  • Works with OE Electronics: It is designed to work in perfect harmony with standard ABS, traction control, and electronic stability programs (ESP), rather than fighting against them.
  • Quieter Operation: There is no "shuffling" or clicking when cornering at low speeds, which is typical of aggressive clutch-style motorsport diffs, making it the perfect fast road and track upgrade.
  • Inherent Drivability: For front-wheel-drive (FWD) cars, it virtually eliminates harsh torque steer and understeer, allowing you to power out of corners much sooner. On rear-wheel-drive (RWD) cars, it gives you a highly controllable, predictable rear axle.

Extra Performance Under Braking

The benefits of a Quaife differential are not limited to acceleration. Under heavy braking, the helical gears work in reverse, transferring torque away from whichever wheel is locking up.

By distributing the deceleration force evenly across both wheels, it delays ABS intervention. This stabilizes the car under hard braking, drastically reduces stopping distances, and allows you to brake much later when entering corners on a track day.
