What Do Spark Plugs Do & Why Are They Important?
The role of a spark plug is simple but critical: it delivers the electrical current required to ignite the compressed air and fuel mixture inside your engine's combustion chamber. This tiny, perfectly timed explosion is what pushes the piston down and generates engine power.
Why upgrading matters for tuned cars: When you remap a car and increase turbo boost pressure, you are forcing significantly more air and fuel into the cylinder. This creates a much denser environment, making it physically harder for the electrical spark to jump between the electrodes.
If you use old, worn out, or cheap standard spark plugs in a tuned engine, the dense cylinder pressure will literally blow the spark out like a candle. This results in heavy misfires, aggressive hesitation under hard acceleration, and a total loss of power. Upgrading to high quality NGK iridium or ruthenium plugs ensures a consistently strong, hot spark even under massive cylinder pressures.

Going "One Step Colder"
Tuned engines generate significantly more heat than standard factory engines. A spark plug must efficiently pull this heat out of the combustion chamber and transfer it into the cylinder head. If the plug gets too hot, it will ignite the fuel before it is supposed to, a highly destructive condition known as engine knock or detonation.
To prevent this, tuners highly recommend switching to a plug that is "one step colder" than your factory specification when running a Stage 1 or Stage 2 remap. NGK colder plugs are engineered to dissipate heat much faster, protecting your forged internals or factory pistons from catastrophic high temperature failure.
Spark Plug Gapping (And How We Can Help)
The "gap" is the exact physical distance between the center electrode and the ground electrode at the firing tip of the plug.
In a heavily tuned engine running high boost, leaving the gap at the wide factory setting often leads to spark blow out. To counter this, it is standard practice to close the gap slightly (for example, reducing it from 0.030" down to 0.022"). A smaller gap means the spark does not have to travel as far through the dense air and fuel mixture, ensuring a guaranteed ignition event every single time.
The JXL Performance Gapping Service: Getting this gap perfectly accurate across four, six, or eight cylinders requires specialized feeler gauges and a delicate touch, push too hard, and you will snap the fragile iridium tip. At JXL Performance, we take the hassle out of your installation. We offer a professional in house spark plug gapping service. Just tell us your required gap, and your new NGK plugs will arrive at your door perfectly calibrated for your specific tune, ready to drop straight into the engine.

The Ford EcoBoost Essential: NGK LTR7
If you own a tuned Ford EcoBoost engine, you already know how sensitive the ignition system can be.
For the Fiesta ST and Focus ST/RS platforms, the NGK LTR7 series (specifically the LTR7IX-11) is the undisputed go to upgrade. It provides the ideal one step colder heat range required to safely handle the aggressive mid range torque spike of a remapped fast Ford. Swapping to a correctly gapped set of LTR7 plugs will completely cure the top end misfires and stuttering that these cars are notorious for when pushed past factory power levels.
