Ford Fiesta ST Mk7 (ST180/ST200) Maintenance Guide
The Ford Fiesta ST 1.6 EcoBoost (2013-2017) is known for its spritely performance and agile handling, making it one of the most popular hot hatches of its era. To keep your Fiesta ST running in top condition, regular maintenance is key. Whether you're a car enthusiast or just want to avoid costly repairs, staying on top of the service schedule will help ensure the longevity and reliability of your vehicle. Here’s a detailed maintenance guide, including service intervals and what to check at each stage.
Service Intervals Overview
Ford recommends regular service intervals every 12,500 miles (20,000km) or 12 months, whichever comes first. However, depending on your driving conditions (like extreme use or heavy traffic), you may want to service your Fiesta ST more frequently. Below is a breakdown of the key maintenance tasks you should perform at different mileage intervals.
We personally serviced our vehicle every 8,000 miles (12,500km) - our ST180 was a Stage 3 Hybrid equipped car running approximately 345bhp - daily use mostly. Every 12,500 Miles (20,000km) or 12 Months – Basic Maintenance/Minor Service
At every 12,500-mile mark or annually (whichever comes first) your Fiesta ST will need the following basic maintenance:
1. Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
The 1.6 EcoBoost engine relies on clean, high-quality oil to ensure smooth operation and to prevent wear. Ford recommends using synthetic 5W-20 oil. Changing the oil filter along with the oil is crucial to maintaining engine health. JXL Performance recommends: Genuine Ford Castrol Magnetec 5w20 Oil
2. Inspect and Replace Air Filter (if necessary)
A clean air filter ensures that your engine receives optimal airflow for efficient combustion. It should be checked every 12,500 miles and replaced if dirty, you could also opt for a performance drop-in filter if you still have the standard airbox. JXL Performance recommends the K&N Performance Air Filter
If you are using an aftermarket induction kit you may want to check the service interval of the filter, cotton filters tend to be “fit and forget” whereas foam filters may require cleaning and oiling.
3. Check Fluid Levels
Ensure that all fluids (coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid) are topped up and in good condition. This helps prevent overheating, ensures proper braking, and keeps steering responsive.
4. Brake System Inspection
Have the brake pads and rotors inspected for wear. The Fiesta ST’s spirited driving capabilities can put stress on the braking system, especially if you're enjoying twisty roads or track days. If you’ve taken your car on an enthusiastic drive and felt your pedal go soft, you may want to consider changing the brake fluid.

5. Tyre Rotation & Inspection
Rotate the tyres to promote even wear, and inspect the tread depth. This ensures better handling and extends the life of your tyres.
Every 25,000 Miles (40,000km) – Intermediate Service
In addition to the basic service, the following checks and replacements should be performed every 25,000 miles (40,000km):
1. Cabin Air Filter Replacement
The cabin air filter helps keep the air inside your car fresh and free from pollutants. Replacing this filter every 25,000 miles ensures good air quality inside the cabin. If you find that your vehicle has a foist like smell, replacing the cabin filter can clear that up too. JXL Performance recommends: Genuine Ford Cabin Filter - ST Mk7 1.6 EcoBoost
2. Spark Plugs
Spark plugs are recommended to be changed every other service (every 2nd year), however we recommend changing them every 12,500 miles or 12 months, especially if you use the car hard, or the car is used on track. Keeping on top of spark plug maintenance ensures optimum performance from your hot hatch! JXL Performance recommends NGK LTR7 Spark Plugs - 0.66mm gapping
Every 37,500 Miles (60,000km) – Major Service
At 37,500 miles (60,000km) or 3 years, a more in-depth inspection is necessary. In addition to the tasks listed above, you should include:
1. Gearbox Fluid Check and Change
The Fiesta ST’s transmission fluid plays a critical role in shifting performance and heat dissipation. It should be checked and replaced if needed. This is particularly important if the car is driven hard or used in stop-and-go traffic frequently.
2. Brake Fluid Change
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, reducing its effectiveness. Flushing and replacing the brake fluid every 37,500 miles ensures consistent braking performance and safety. If you use your vehicle on track, or push the brakes hard on a regular basis, changing the brake fluid every 12 months is advised.
Every 50,000 Miles (80,000km) – Advanced Maintenance
As your Fiesta ST ages, more significant components may need attention:
1. Timing Belt Inspection
The Fiesta ST uses a timing belt, which is critical for synchronizing the engine's components. Although Ford recommends checking the belt at 60,000 miles, it may not need replacement until 100,000 miles. However, if you notice signs of wear or hear unusual noises, it's best to replace it sooner rather than later. Proactive maintenance for the timing belt is key – if the belt has issues or snaps, this could lead to a big bill in the future.
2. Water Pump Inspection/Replacement
While the timing belt is being inspected, it's also wise to check/replace the water pump. These components often wear out around the same time and can be replaced together to save on labour costs.
3. Exhaust System Check
Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, rust, or damage. A faulty exhaust can negatively affect performance and emissions. Aftermarket/higher quality exhaust systems do not tend to suffer as much as the OEM exhaust system, however it’s always worth checking to be on the safe side.

4. Suspension and Steering Inspection
As mileage increases, suspension components such as struts, shocks, and bushings may begin to wear out. Checking and replacing these as needed will keep the ride smooth and handling sharp. Key items which usually require attention on the Ford Fiesta ST180 include:
- Rear Beam Bushes – these can be prone to degradation over time – JXL Performance recommends the Powerflex Ream Beam Bush upgrade
- Upper Isolator Bushes – the OEM material degrades and flattens over time/significant use – JXL Performance recommends the Powerflex Upper Isolator set
- Lower Control Arms (Front Wishbones) – both the front and rear bushes can be susceptible to degrading over time and heavy use – JXL Performance recommends the SuperPro Control Arm Replacement (comes with bushes)
Miscellaneous Key Maintenance Tips for the Fiesta ST
Turbo Care: The 1.6 EcoBoost engine is turbocharged, which means you should be mindful of turbo maintenance. Letting the car idle for a minute before shutting off helps cool the turbo and extends its lifespan.
Diverter Valve: It is well documented that the OEM (standard) diverter valve for the ST180 can be prone to splitting within the diaphragm causing slight boost leaks. If your vehicle feels “slightly slower” then before this could be the culprit. If you experience these issues, it's worth upgrading to the superior Forge Recirculation Valve.
Fuel Cam Bucket: One key issue we have discovered over the years is that the cam bucket which sits beneath the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) can become worn over time, leading to inconsistent fuel pressure readings, and resulting in lower power as the car cannot gain a consistent fuel pressure. These are relatively inexpensive and easy to fit, if you haven’t changed it already, consider doing so – especially if your Fiesta ST is tuned.
Battery Maintenance: The battery should be inspected regularly for corrosion and overall health, especially if you use the car for short trips that don't give the alternator enough time to fully charge the battery. Ford recommended service schedule for the battery is every 4 years.
Alignment Check: If you notice uneven tire wear or if the car pulls to one side, have the wheel alignment checked. Proper alignment is critical for handling and tire longevity.
Drive Belt: Inspect the drive belt every 40,000 to 60,000 miles for signs of wear, such as cracks or fraying. Replace it if necessary to prevent sudden failure.
Service according to your requirements: Whilst the guide above is just that, a guide on the servicing/maintenance requirements for the ST180/ST200, servicing to your own requirements is key. If you use the vehicle hard, or take the vehicle on track, you may find your components wear, and foul quicker/easier. Spark plugs, Oil, Oil Filter, Brakes and Suspension will all be subject to wearing quicker, so keep that in mind when considering your maintenance schedule.
Conclusion
Maintaining your 2013-2017 Ford Fiesta ST 1.6 EcoBoost is essential for preserving its performance and longevity. Following the recommended service intervals and keeping an eye on key components like the engine, brakes, and fluids will help you avoid costly repairs and enjoy your hot hatch for many miles to come. Always refer to the owner’s manual for specifics and consider consulting a professional mechanic for any advanced services.
By staying proactive, your Fiesta ST will continue to deliver driving thrills for years to come!
