BMW M240i Tuning Guide: Unlocking Your Car's True Potential
The BMW M240i is a fantastic machine straight out of the factory. With its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine (B58), this hot hatch delivers impressive performance and drivability. But like any performance vehicle, there’s always room for improvement. Whether you're seeking more power, enhanced handling, or a more aggressive exhaust note, tuning your M240i is the way to go. In this guide, we’ll break down the most popular modifications, explain the benefits, and help you understand how to take your car to the next level.
Not sure on what parts to choose? We'll give you our personal recommendations as we've been B58 owners for a long time here at JXL Performance - check out all of our M240i parts here!
Why Tune Your BMW M240i?
Tuning your BMW M240i isn't just about gaining more power, although that’s a huge benefit. It’s about tailoring your car to fit your driving style, unlocking hidden potential, and enhancing the overall experience. With a few carefully selected modifications, you can achieve better throttle response, improved handling, and a better driving experience. Below, we'll cover common upgrades and their benefits to help you get the most out of your M140i.
1. Exhaust Upgrades
Upgrading the exhaust system is often one of the first mods M240i owners go for. Why? A performance exhaust can improve both sound and power output.
Popular options include:
- Cat-back exhaust systems: These replace the rear part of your exhaust, offering a deeper, sportier sound without going too extreme. JXL Performance recommends: Remus Exhaust System
- Downpipes: For those wanting significant performance gains, high-flow or decatted downpipes are a must. These reduce exhaust restrictions and allow the turbo to spool faster, boosting power. JXL Performance recommends - Scorpion 5" Downpipe
Benefits:
- Increased horsepower
- Improved turbo efficiency
- Aggressive sound to match the car’s performance
2. Air Intakes
Stock air intakes tend to be restrictive. Swapping in a performance intake allows your engine to breathe more freely, improving both power and throttle response.
Popular options:
- Cold air intakes: These systems pull cooler, denser air into the engine, improving combustion. JXL Performance recommends: Ramair Pro-Ram Induction Kit
- Panel filters: A less invasive option than a full intake system, but still effective at increasing airflow and reducing restrictions. JXL Performance recommends: AIRTEC Motorsport Replacement Filter & Intake Hose Upgrade
Benefits:
- Increased horsepower and torque
- Better throttle response
- More pronounced turbo noises (who doesn't love that?)
3. Suspension Upgrades
If you’re looking to improve handling, suspension upgrades are key. The M240i handles well in stock form, but it can feel a bit soft for aggressive driving or track use.
Popular options:
- Lowering springs: These lower your car’s center of gravity, improving stability and reducing body roll. JXL Performance recommends: Eibach Pro Kit Lowering Springs
- Coilovers: A more comprehensive solution, offering adjustable ride height, damping, and rebound settings for tailored performance. JXL Performance recommends: BC Racing BR-RA Coilovers M240i
- Upgraded anti-roll bars: These reduce body roll further, keeping your car flatter in corners.
Benefits:
- Sharper, more responsive handling
- Reduced body roll
- A more aggressive stance
4. ECU Tuning
At the heart of M240i tuning is the ECU (engine control unit) remap. BMW's stock tune leaves a lot of untapped potential on the table. By remapping the ECU, you can unlock more power and better drivability without changing any hardware.
ECU Tuning is dependent on what level of modifications you have on your vehicle, however there is a vast array of static tuners, or app-controlled tuning such as MHD, MG Flasher and BootMod3 - the latter tends to be the most popular due to giving more freedom on making slight adjustments to things such as the cold start, burbles etc.
Benefits:
- Significantly more power and torque
- Improved throttle response
- Customizable to your driving style and needs
Stage Tuning for BMW M240i
Tuning is often broken down into stages, with each stage representing a certain level of modification. Let’s look at the differences between Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3 tuning for the M240i, so you can determine which is right for you.
Stage 1 Tuning
Stage 1 tuning is the perfect starting point for anyone new to tuning or those looking for a simple, hassle-free upgrade. It only requires an ECU remap, and no additional hardware is necessary.
Parts Required:
- ECU remap (software only)
- You can add modifications such as induction kits, panel filters, with no need to adjust this.
Expected Gains:
- Power increase: 80-90bhp
Benefits:
- Improved throttle response
- No hardware changes required
- Safe and reliable boost in performance
Stage 2 Tuning
Stage 2 tuning involves more aggressive software mapping, but it requires some supporting hardware upgrades to work properly. Typically, you’ll need an upgraded exhaust and a high-flow downpipe to make the most of Stage 2 tuning.
Parts Required:
- ECU remap - Essential
- High-flow downpipe - Essential
- Performance exhaust system - Nice to have, not essential
Expected Gains:
- Power increase: 120-130bhp (Vs. Stock figures)
Benefits:
- Increased power and torque
- Enhanced sound with exhaust modifications
- More aggressive driving feel
JXL Performance tip: Stage 2+ is also a term thrown around in the B58 world quite often, Stage 2+ is when a vehicle has the above modifications (Downpipe, and ECU tune) alongside the upgraded B58TU fuel pump from either the B48 JCW models, or B58 A90 Toyota Supra, this provides extra fuelling, which results in more power. Expected power around 460-470bhp with the fuel pump added.
Stage 3 Tuning
Stage 3 tuning is for those who want the maximum performance their M240i can deliver. This stage typically involves significant hardware upgrades like a bigger turbo, upgraded fuel systems, and an intercooler to handle the additional power.
Parts Required:
- ECU remap
- Upgraded turbocharger
- High-flow downpipe
- Upgraded chargecooler and charge pipes
- Upgraded fuel system (HPFP mainly, people also upgrade to port injection at this level)
- Performance exhaust system
Expected Gains:
- Power increase: +280bhp minimum with small hybrid turbo (most small hybrid turbos even with the B58TU pump can see around 530/540bhp - with the fuel pump being a limiting factor. Dorch Stage 2 and Spool FX180 are popular fuel pump options to push as far as 1000bhp.
Benefits:
- Supercar surprising performance
- Maximum power and acceleration
- Requires comprehensive hardware upgrades
