G90/G99 M5 Tuning Guide

Owning a G90 or G99 M5 brings a blend of modern engineering and raw performance. As enthusiasts, we look beyond the factory setup to extract more from the twin-turbo V8, sharpen handling and refine the soundtrack. This guide covers core modifications, ongoing maintenance and practical considerations for anyone thinking about tuning BMW’s latest M5.

Understanding the G90/G99 M5 Platform

BMW’s newest M5 variants share a twin turbo V8, advanced all-wheel drive and a capable eight-speed automatic, coupled with an electric motor to boost the power numbers. The car arrives well balanced from the factory, with sharpened chassis and strong brakes. Aftermarket support is growing fast, but costs remain high compared with older platforms.

Engine Tuning

Engine tuning on the G90/G99 M5 centres on ECU remaps and bolt-on hardware. A stage 1 map can lift power by 50–80 bhp without altering fuel or boost limits. Further gains demand supporting mods.

These upgrades tend to be reversible, preserving resale value. RaceChip tuning boxes provide a straightforward, reversible way to boost power on the G90/G99 M5 without touching the factory ECU, so there’s no risk to your warranty or ECU health. The GTS 5 Black unit, as listed on JXL Performance, even comes with a two-year engine warranty. By intercepting sensor signals before they reach the ECU, RaceChips sidestep the need for a direct remap—ideal for owners who want more performance but need to keep factory cover intact. They’ve become a go-to solution for anyone who’s warranty-conscious or facing ECU lock-out.

Aftermarket Part Upgrades

The M5’s adaptive dampers and roll-stiff springs can be replaced or adjusted to suit track or road use. Brakes are strong, but more demanding drivers may want even more bite and fade resistance.

There is a number of lowering springs available on the market for the G90/G99 M5 currently, as the platform is developed further we expect to see a whole range of coilover systems available for the new M5. Check out the link above to see currently available suspension parts (this will be added to and changed over time).

Whilst even the steel option brakes for the G90/G99 M5 are good enough for road use, some owners may want to uprate their pads to something with a little extra bite. Consider changing out your brake fluid to avoid boiling during hard use. For owners using the Carbon Ceramic brakes you are perfectly equipped for road and track use, just be weary of the replacement costs!

Whilst the G90/G99 M5 comes from factory with the monstrous 4.4 twin-turbo V8 - due to EU/Worlwide emmissions regulations, the car is still quite quiet. If you are looking to increse the noise on your G90/G99, consider checking out our range of exhausts above, to include GPF-Back systems and axle-back systems, alongside downpipes (when released) from companies suchs Milltek Sport, Akrapovic, Remus, Scorpion and more.

Conclusion

The G90/G99 M5 welcomes modifications aso do many other modern BMW M-Cars, with the vehicles releasing fairly recently, we are yet to see a full suite of modifications available for the G90/G99. If the F90 M5 is anything to go by, you need to keep a watchful eye upon our dedicated G90/G99 page (linked below) for new releases.
